Unit 5: The Calendar

This unit introduces English Learners (ELs) to the calendar and talking about the date. Students practice the days of the week and months of the year with sentence frames like these: Today is ___, Tomorrow will be___, and Last month was___. New routines include sorting (Speed Sort and Trick Your Partner) and repeating a poem, phrase by phrase.

Session 1: The Calendar: Days and Months

Students learn the days of the week, months of the year and abbreviated forms. They practice with Long List and Memory playing cards.

Session 2: Talking About the Date

English learners (ELs) review days and months, match these to the abbreviated forms and ask and answer: What is the date today?

Session 3: Practice Talking About the Date

Students review the days and months. They practice with sentence frames like: Today is___. Last month was ____. Students listen to a poem about the calendar noting vocabulary and rhyming words

Session 4: Review the Calendar, Sorting and Prepare for Assessments

English learners (ELs) review days and months, repeat a poem, fill in an Alphabet Box and learn new sorting routines. Students then prepare for a speaking and listening assessment.

Session 5: Take Listening and Speaking Tests

Students review days and months and then take a listening and speaking assessment. Students complete all workbook activities.
