Unit 7: Day and Night
In Unit 7, beginning English learners explore day and night, using the nouns sun, moon, stars, Earth, the verbs come and go, as well as up, down, dark and light. Students also learn about opposites. Whole group activities include Wordsplash and Word Web. Students learn a new movement break, Find Your Partner, how to play Pictionary, and continue to do flash card activities (See It, Say It, Memory and Wordsplash). Assessments include listening, speaking, reading, and dictation (listening and writing).
Session 1: Day and Night
Session 1 introduces English learners to day and night with two short paragraphs describing this daily cycle. Students practice new vocabulary with Word Web, drills (listening reading and writing) and by making flash cards.
Session 2: Day or Night?
In Session 2, students review new vocabulary then practice identifying day or night in photos. Students practice in whole group (cloze, listen to a poem), partner (See It, Say It, Wordsplash, Pictionary) and individual (language drills) activities. Students learn a movement break called Find Your Partner.
Session 3: What do you see?
Session 3 begins with a review of vocabulary using Wordsplash. Students identify the sun, moon, stars and Earth using NASA photos from space. Students listen to a poem and repeating each phrase then do sorting activities and language drills.
In Session 4, students review selected vocabulary with Wordsplash, do a phonics preview and fill in the Alphabet Box. Then they practice for listening, speaking, and listening and writing (dictation) assessments.
Session 4: Review and Prepare for Assessments
Session 5: Review Vocabulary and Take Tests
Session 5 begins with a vocabulary review, with students matching words to images. Then English learners take listening and speaking tests. There are also optional reading and dictation tests in the student workbook.
