In Unit 16, beginning English learners study new vocabulary related to the weather. They practice new words with familiar activities: Wordsplash, Picture Match, Word Web and Picture Reveal. Students learn that adjectives tell about nouns and learn how to form an adjective by adding the suffix y to the end of a noun. They review the days of the week while reading about the weather. After a brief introduction to cause and effect, students use new vocabulary to describe explain why something happens.  Each session has language drills in the student workbook.

Session 1: All Kinds of Weather

In Session 1, students learn the names of weather nouns (e.g. rain), verbs (e.g. splash) and adjectives to describe the day (e.g. wind) and the temperature (cold, cool, warm and hot). They practice with Wordsplash, Picture Reveal and by making flash cards.

During session 2, beginning English learners practice new vocabulary with Picture Match and Word Web. They listen to a passage that describes many changes in the weather over a week as well as a poem. Finally, they practice asking about and describing the weather with a partner.

Session 2: Weather All Week Long

Students begin Session 3 by reviewing vocabulary with picture match. Next, they learn about adjectives and how to form weather-related adjectives by adding the suffix -y to words like rain and sun. They read and repeat a poem and the passage Weather All Week Long and conclude with partner activities.

Session 3: Practice with a Partner

English learners review vocabulary in Session 4, fill in the Alphabet Box with new vocabulary and learn the relationship between a cause and an effect. During the phonics preview, they see examples of CVC words they have studied and learn how the letters i and e (with a consonant between) often represents the long I vowel sound. The students practice for the listening and speaking tests.

Session 4: Review and Prepare for Tests

Session 5: Review and Take Tests

In Session 5, students review selected vocabulary with Wordsplash and then take the listening and speaking tests for words related to weather.
