Unit 6: Money

This unit introduces English Learners (ELs) to money in the form of bills and coins as well as the numbers from 70 to 100. Students learn the names and value of coins and bills. New routines include the movement break, 4 Corners, and Word Web, where students use clues to find a word. Students use the sentence frame: Name has __ pennies, __ nickels, __ dimes and __ quarters. Name has __ coins with a value of $__.

Session 1: Money - Coins and Bills

Students learn the names of coins (dime, nickel, penny and quarter) and the numbers from 70 to 100. Students practice with Wordsplash and make flash cards.

Session 2: The Value of Coins

English learners (ELs) review coins and bills and match the names of coins to images. Students then learn the value of each coin and practice finding the value of a set of coins. Partners play Show me the money!

Session 3: How Much Money?

Students review bills, coins and numbers 70 to 100 with a whole group activity (Word Web), a movement break (4 Corners) and a partner activity: How much money? Students find the value of a set of bills. Then, they listen for vocabulary and rhyming words in a short poem

Session 4: Review Money and Prepare for Assessments

English learners (ELs) review bills, coins and numbers 70 to 100, repeat a poem, and fill in an Alphabet Box. Students then prepare for three assessments: speaking, listening, and a combined listening and writing assessment.

Session 5: Review Money and Take Tests

Students review bills and coins, using Word Web. Then they complete a listening test, speaking test and a listening and writing test. Students finish any workbook activities.
