In Unit 8, beginning English learners (ELs) expand their understanding of day and night by learning about different times of day and activities that form their daily routine. Partner activities include See It, Say It, Wordsplash, Trick your Partner and Charades. Students also practice new vocabulary by asking yes and no questions about when they do various things (e.g. eat, take a bath, read a book). As in previous units, assessments include listening, speaking, reading, and dictation (listening and writing).
Session 1: Times of Day
In Session 1, students learn about different times of day: midnight, morning, noon, afternoon and evening. Students also learn about telling time with AM and PM.
Session 2: Daily Routine
Session 2 introduces students to activities they typically do on a Saturday. Students practice new vocabulary in whole group and with a partner.
Session 3 begins with a review of vocabulary. Students identify time (using AM and PM), time of day and activity featured in a series of images. Students listen to a poem, review opposites and then do partner activities including See It, Say It, Trick Your Partner, and Wordsplash.
Session 3: What do you see?
In Session 4, students review times of day and daily routine with Wordsplash, do a phonics preview and fill in the Alphabet Box, and listen to and repeat a poem. Then they practice for listening and speaking tests.
Session 4: Review and Prepare for Assessments
Session 5 begins with a short vocabulary review. Then English learners take listening and speaking tests. There are also optional reading and dictation tests in the student workbook.
