Unit 12: At Home

In Unit 12, beginning English learners practice the vocabulary for three household rooms and the related furniture or objects. They review new words with familiar activities: Word Web, Wordsplash, Picture Match and Picture Reveal. In this unit, students learn about how action verbs in the present tense can tell what someone usually does (e.g. he talks) and what someone is doing right now (e.g. he is talking). English learners continue to practice classifying nouns and asking questions. Each session has language drills in the student workbook.

Session 1: At Home

In Session 1, students learn the names of three room (living room, kitchen and bedroom), related objects and six new verbs. They practice new nouns with Word Web. Finally, students make flash cards.

Beginning English learners practice new vocabulary in Session 2. Students listen to the story of Goldilocks and answer simple questions; listen to a poem, and learn how to use action verbs to express what someone usually does or is doing right now. Session 2: Action Verbs at Home

In session 3, students begin by reviewing vocabulary with picture match and Wordsplash. They practice using the pronoun they and listen to and repeat a poem. Finally, students get extra practice with partner activities, including Memory, Word Sorts, Pictionary and Vocabulary Crossword.

Session 3: Practice with a Partner

Students review vocabulary in Session 4 and fill in the Alphabet Box with words from Units 11 and 12. For the phonics preview, they learn two ways that English represents the sound /ee/: in sweep and clean and also see examples of CVC words with each vowel. The students practice for the listening and speaking tests.

Session 4: Review and Prepare for Tests

Session 5: Review and Take Tests

In Session 5, student first review of vocabulary with Wordsplash and Word Web. They then take listening and speaking tests. Students complete all language drills when they are done testing.
