Unit 10: At School

In Unit 10, English learners discover words for four key places in a school – the classroom, the gym, the playground and the cafeteria. They learn words and phrases to describe what students do and use in these spaces. Students expand their knowledge of adverbs of frequency to include always and never. They also learn what a noun is and classify nouns as persons, places or things. Finally, students practice asking questions with where and what.
Session 1 introduces students to four locations in school – the classroom, the gym, the cafeteria and the playground. Short passages explain who is in the classroom, what students use in the classroom, and what students do in the gym and on the playground. Students practice vocabulary with Word Web and make flash cards.
Session 1: At School
Session 2: What Did You Do At School Today?
In Session 2, students review new words, practice identifying places in school with Picture Reveal, and discover the meaning of always and never. They listen to a poem, focusing on the vocabulary and rhyming words and practice asking questions using where and what
Session 3: Nouns: Person, Place or Thing
Session 3 begins with a review of vocabulary using Picture Match. Then students learn what a noun is and sort nouns into three groups: person, place or thing. Students read and repeat a poem and then move into partner activities and language drills.
In session 4, after reviewing vocabulary, students complete the Alphabet Box, adding words from Units 6 through 10. The Phonics Preview looks at ways to represent the sound /er/ found in teacher, Earth, and circle. Students practice using vocabulary by asking yes/no questions before taking practice tests for listening and speaking.
Session 4: Review and Prepare for Tests
Session 5 begins with a quick review of vocabulary using Word Splash and Word Web. Then students take listening and speaking tests. The student workbook also contains an optional dictation and reading tests focusing on the passage and poem for the unit.
