Unit 11: Family and Pets

In Unit 11, students learn English words for family members and pets. They learn a new activity called Odd Word Out that draws on higher order thinking skills. English learners continue classifying nouns as persons, places or things, including animals. Finally, students practice asking questions with who. Each session has language drills for listening, reading and writing in the student workbook.
In Session 1, students learn the names of various family members, four common pets, and some verbs that describe activities families do together . They practice new vocabulary by choosing between two options and with Word Web. Finally, students make flash cards.
Session 2: About Your Family
Beginning English learners practice new vocabulary by listening to and repeating words playing Wordsplash and learning selected pronouns. They ask and answer questions using the yes/no format and the word who. Students also sort nouns in 3 categories: person, animal or thing and listen to a poem.
In session 3, students begin by reviewing vocabulary with picture match and Wordsplash. They learn Odd Word Out, in which they describe the word that does not fit with the others in a short list. They listen to and repeat a poem and then engage in partner activities.
Session 3: Odd Word Out and Other Partner Activities
Students review vocabulary, see how to fill in the Alphabet Box, and preview some ways that English represents a number of sounds found in the new vocabulary. The students practice for the listening and speaking tests.
Session 4: Review and Prepare for Tests
In Session 5, beginning English learners do a quick review of vocabulary then continue to the listening and speaking tests. Students complete the workbook pages while the teachers gives the speaking test to individual students.
