In Unit 17, English learners study new vocabulary related to the four seasons. The students practice new words with familiar activities: Wordsplash, Word Web, Memory, Picture Match and Picture Reveal. Students review language related to the weather as they learn how weather, plants and animals change with the seasons. In this unit, English learners also study the main idea and details of a paragraph. Each session has language drills in the student workbook.

In Session 1, students learn the names of the four seasons as well as related nouns (e.g. cycle) and verbs (e.g. change). They practice with Wordsplash and make flashcards.

Session 1: The Four Seasons

Session 2: Weather Changes with the Seasons

During session 2, beginning English learners practice new vocabulary with Word Web. They listen to a poem about the different seasons and a passage about how weather changes with the seasons. Finally, the session ends with an introduction to linking verbs.

Session 3: Plants and Animals Change Each Season

Students begin Session 3 by reviewing vocabulary with picture match. They read and repeat the poem Each Season and listen to a passage about how plants and animals change with the seasons. Students then practice with partner activities.

Session 4: Main Idea and Details

In Session 4, English learners read and repeat a passage about the changing seasons. Then they study the difference between a main idea and details of a nonfiction paragraph.

Session 5: Review and Prepare for Tests

Students in Session 5 preview the Alphabet Box with words from Units 16 and 17.  In the Phonics Preview, they review CVC words and learn three ways to represent the sound /ee/ as shown in me, tree and eat. The students practice for the listening and speaking tests.

Session 6: Take Speaking and Listening Tests

In Session 6, beginning English learners review vocabulary with WordWeb and take listening and speaking tests. Students complete the language drills when they are done testing.
