Unit 9: Places To Go

In Unit 9, students learn words and phrases to describe going to school, to the park and home to a house or apartment. They study new ways to ask questions, using where and when. Finally, the unit introduces students to the adverbs usually and sometimes, and first, next and then. Students practice vocabulary in whole group or with a. partner using Wordsplash, Memory, Charades and a new activity – Picture Reveal.

Session 1 introduces English learners to three places to go: home, school and the park in a short passage describing a typical school day. Students practice asking yes/ no questions with a partner and make flash cards.

Session 2: Where Do You Go?

In Session 2, students review vocabulary, practice asking questions with where, and discover the meaning of usually and sometimes. They listen to a poem, focusing on the vocabulary and rhyming words before completing language drills.

Session 3 begins with a review of vocabulary using picture matching, Wordsplash and a new activity, Picture Reveal. Students ask questions with when and respond with the time or time of day. The session ends with partner activities and language drills.

Session 3: When Do You Go?

In session 4, students practice telling where they go first, next and then on a Tuesday and on a Saturday. They complete the Alphabet Box and review the sound /ar/ heard in March, dark, car and park. Finally, they take practice tests for listening and speaking.

Session 4: Review and Prepare for Tests

Session 5 begins with a quick review of vocabulary followed by the listening and speaking tests. Students complete workbook pages for Unit 9. The student workbook also contains an optional dictation and reading tests.
