In Unit 13, beginning English learners study new vocabulary related to plants, animals and nonliving things often found in a park. They again practice using this new vocabulary with familiar activities: Word Web, Wordsplash, Picture Match and Picture Reveal.  In this unit, students expand their understanding of how we use action verbs in the present tense to express what someone is doing right now by using the pronouns I, we and you. Students sort words into nouns and verbs and learn how to form plural nouns.   Each session has language drills in the student workbook.

Session 1: At The Park

In Session 1, students learn the names of plants (e.g. grass), animals (e.g. squirrel) and things (e.g. pond) often found in a park and seven new verbs (climb, float, fly, grow, pull, push, swim). They practice selected nouns with Word Web. Finally, students make flash cards.

In session 2, beginning English learners practice new vocabulary as a group using picture reveal, Wordsplash and Word Web. They practice with a partner using Odd Word Out. Students listen to a poem and a short text Picnic at the Park. They learn how to form a plural noun, usually by adding s.

Session 2: Picnic at the Park

Students begin Session 3 by reviewing new words with picture match and Wordsplash before reading and repeating a poem. They practice adding -ing to action verbs to show what the children are doing in the park. Then, students focus on how to modify verbs when using the pronouns I, we and you.  Learners then practice with a partner using See It, Say It, Memory, and Pictionary.

Session 3: Practice with a Partner

English learners  review new vocabulary in Session 4, sort words into nouns and verbs and fill in the Alphabet Box with vocabulary from Units 11 through 13.  In the phonics preview, they review and expand words with the sound /er/ as in squirrel and water.  Students also see examples of CVC words with each vowel.  The students practice for the listening and speaking tests.

Session 4: Review and Prepare for Tests

Session 5: Review and Take Tests

In Session 5, student first review of vocabulary with Wordsplash and Word Web. They then take listening and speaking tests. Students complete all language drills when they are done testing.
